London, 1974. I'm kipping in a half-furnished flat with Bob Thomas the piper. The astrology magazine says the full moon is going to fall on Halloween, the old Celtic harvest festival: the perfect time to go see Stonehenge. "You better take these," says Bob, and gives me his last two tabs of Owsley acid. A pair of swans floats along the river Avon. The fields on either side of the highway are on fire. Is this stuff taking effect? No - it's the farmers burning the stubble fields after the harvest.
I climb the ridge. The sun is setting over Salisbury Plain when I see the stones for the first time. A flock of grey birds wheels around my head. They bank, and I'm enveloped in a flash of silver-white underbellies ... and lines from "Illuminations" flood back to me: | ||
